Membership in the ISO/TC 307 Technical Committee – Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies

Originally developed for digital currencies, blockchain technology is now expanding globally as one of the most reliable methods for storing and verifying data. Trust in this technology is key to its widespread adoption across various sectors. To ensure that blockchain functions effectively and securely in all areas of business, it is essential to establish and follow clear rules and standards. This is where the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) plays a crucial role by focusing on the development and revision of standards for blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (DLT).

In 2016, the ISO/TC 307 technical committee was established with the goal of standardizing blockchain and DLT to support interoperability and data exchange among users, applications, and systems. This committee is a key body for defining the rules that ensure security, authenticity, traceability, privacy, sustainability, and other important aspects that blockchain brings during its implementation.

Our Participation in Standards Development

In 2020, we became a member of the Technical Standardization Committee TNK 754, Working Group for ISO/IEC 307 – Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies. Membership in this committee allows us to participate in the creation and revision of blockchain technology standards and contribute to the development of global standards that will shape the future use of blockchain. This enables us to stay informed about what standards are being developed and when, ensuring that our platforms remain aligned with the latest norms.

This membership also provides us with access to up-to-date information on standards and allows us to be among the first to become acquainted with them. Furthermore, we actively participate in translating selected standards into Czech for the Czech Agency for Standardization (ČAS), which helps increase accessibility and implementation of these standards within the Czech Republic.

Certification and Upcoming Implementing Acts for eIDAS 2.0

For the certification of blockchain service providers, including those offering qualified services under eIDAS 2.0, key standards include ISO 23257:2022, which defines the reference architecture for blockchain. An important technical report is ISO/TR 23244:2020, which addresses privacy in blockchain technologies. We expect that upcoming implementing acts for eIDAS 2.0 will be based on these standards and will directly impact blockchain service providers across the EU.

Our blockchain platform, NABRE, is designed to comply with these standards and is ready for use across various industrial sectors. Unlike some blockchain solutions focused mainly on cryptocurrencies and NFTs, our platform is oriented toward industrial, commercial, and service applications. NABRE is built as a consortium blockchain, where individual node owners control the location of the hardware hosting the blockchain node. This approach aligns with EU Regulation 2023/2854 (Data Act), which governs data storage outside the EU.

Published ISO/TC 307 Standards

Currently, there are 12 published standards, with several more in development. Key blockchain and DLT-related standards include:

  • ISO 22739 – Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies – Vocabulary
  • ISO 23257:2022 – Blockchain and DLT – Reference architecture
  • ISO/TR 23244:2020 – Blockchain and DLT – Privacy and personally identifiable information protection considerations
  • ISO 23535 – Blockchain and DLT – Security considerations
  • ISO 23454 – Blockchain and DLT – Traceability and auditability
  • ISO 23499 – Blockchain and DLT – Legal aspects
  • ISO 24267 – Blockchain and DLT – Data integrity and immutability
  • ISO/IEC 24824 – Blockchain and DLT – Interoperability
  • ISO 25000 – Blockchain and DLT – Testing and validation
  • ISO 25011 – Blockchain and DLT – Quality assurance
  • ISO 25111 – Blockchain and DLT – Integration with existing IT systems
  • ISO 25247 – Blockchain and DLT – Application programming interfaces (APIs)

These standards are available on the ISO/TC 307 technical committee website, where you can also view drafts and ongoing development projects.

Thanks to our membership in ISO/TC 307, we have access to the latest developments in blockchain and DLT standardization. This allows us to design and certify platforms that meet stringent international requirements, providing our clients with secure, interoperable, and legally compliant blockchain solutions across industries.
